How much has Architecture Evolved over Time?

Today’s most celebrated works of architecture contain very complex designs, ideas, and styles. But these complex characteristics work to benefit both family and business flow of a building. One architects idea can ultimately improve convenience and efficiency in one’s country. A lot of people do not realize that architecture has not always been designed for a better sense of functionalism. In fact, in earlier prehistoric time eras, architecture was simple. Architecture has come a very long way, and yet still continues to advance in order to continue to meet societal needs.

Architecture dates back as far as thousands of years ago. One early example includes the famous Stone Henge that was constructed in 2000 B.C. As time goes on, the human race continues to become more intelligent. This is when new ideas began to emerge in people’s minds. For instance, early Egyptians began to design structures and tombs to worship their gods and kings. Religious aspects of design continued to evolve throughout history. Religious styles still exist in today’s generation, but they have now been taken over a more modernist approach.

Religious trends slowly begin to die out, while technology and media begin to change culture and perception of the world. This can be seen in the Industrial Revolution, where new machinery influenced designers to focus on function. The birth of iron ore and steel brought forth the rise of early skyscrapers and corporate and institutional buildings such as hospitals. Iron and steel also gave birth to the word famous Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Post-Modernist architecture still respects the whole idea of functionalism. Architects continued to design structures that had better “flow.” This means that buildings were designed to make work more efficient, and that there were fewer obstacles to work around. Post-modernist architecture also borrows historical trends that may have been seen in previous generations. One major focus that is also seen in this type of architecture is trying to make a building as “green” as possible. Green architecture can be considered post-modernist. These buildings are designed to save energy and respect the environment.

Architects have the ability to create our future. With the help of technology and human intelligence, architects can design what they think best fits the people’s needs. Society has always adapted to the architects ideas, while the architects continue to see what works best for society. The future of designing lies in the hands of architects, preparing the next generation of architectural trends which will likely continue to be based on function.
