Step 1

I had to search for a mentor. This step took a while, but I finally found someone that was an architect who was willing to help me. Her name was Lindsey.

 Step 2

I had really no idea what i wanted to do for my project. I just knew that I wanted to do something with the technology used in Architecture.

My mentor helped me come up with a product that I could create.

Step 4

After uploading the floor plan model that i revised, I began to create my 3Dimensional  concept of the floor plan.  This was very stressful, because I was learning the basics of Google Sketchup while I was designing my cabin.

This was very stressful, because I was learning the basics of Google Sketchup while I was designing my cabin. My mentor was very helpful on guiding me through Google Sketchup. I also had to wait a while to buy a computer to use at home, so that also postponed me to download Google Sketchup. Plus, at some point in the process, my design would freeze every time I tried to add more to it, so I had a tough time working around that issue.

Step 6

I completed my presentation. So the next step was to present in front of a group of students. I had originally intended to find a drafting/architectural class to present to, but due to certain guidelines and a short amount of time, I was unable to get that particular group. Instead I presented to a group of early college students who were interested in different careers. I was nervous at first, but once i was in the zone, I had no problem completing my presentation.

I passed out the survey to the students to get some feedback on my presentation. I learned that a couple of students found my presentation very beneficial to their career choices. Also everyone in the class found that my presentation was very interesting.

Step3

I used a floor plan of a model of a cabin that my mentor gave me to create a image that I could scan into a computer and upload the image to a program called Google Sketchup.

The only really obstacle that I faced in this step was that it had been a while since I had done anything with a floor plan created from a program called AutoCad.

Step 5

After finally creating a successful 3D model of a cabin, I started working on a presentation that would inform other students on what other types of software and technology are used in creating architecture.

In this process, I also created a survey for the students to rate my presentation.

Overall obstacles

  • Very shy/nervous personality
  • Limited computer access at home
  • Google SketchUp design with constant freezing
  • Time restraint

Overall Successes:

  • Gained more confidence in giving speeches
  • Learned new type of architectural software
  • Experienced the work life of an architect
  • Got my message across to other students
